About this map

Salt Evaporators and a complex network of industrial canals define this landscape on the southern edge of the Great Salt Lake during the early 1970s. The region is marked by significant water management and industrial infrastructure, including the Brighton Branch and the Salt Lake Garfield and Western railroad lines that serviced the area near Saltair. The map captures a unique intersection of commerce and conservation, where industrial Tailings Pond sites sit adjacent to the Farmington Bay Waterfowl Management Area and numerous private sporting camps such as the Lake Front Duck Club. A series of Old Railroad Grades and the Consolidated North Point Old Railroad Grade trace earlier transportation routes across the alkali flats and around landforms like Rabbit Knoll and Browns Island.
