1943 Map of San Miguel Island East

USGS Topo · Published 1968

About this map

The eastern portion of San Miguel Island is captured here during the Second World War, showing the isolated ranching and maritime landscape of this Santa Barbara Channel island. At the center of the island’s sparse human activity is the Ranch House Flagpole and a nearby Ranch, serving as the primary landmarks for those inhabiting or visiting the windswept terrain. The coast is defined by numerous rocky outcroppings and named hazards such as Judge Rock, Nifty Rock, and March Rock near Harris Point. Protecting the northern approach is Cuyler Harbor, anchored by the distinctive Prince Island and Kid Rock. The topography is marked by steep coastal bluffs leading to the prominent eastern finger of Cardwell Point. This survey reflects the island's character as a remote outpost, where the surrounding San Miguel Passage and Pacific Ocean dictated the pace of life and travel.
