San Rafael Mtn and McKinley Mtn dominate this interior portion of the Los Padres National Forest in Santa Barbara County. This high-elevation wilderness is defined by a network of drainage systems, including the South Fork Sisquoc River in the north and the winding Santa Cruz Creek to the south. The area is marked by a series of remote backcountry outposts and stations, such as the Santa Cruz Guard Sta and Doty Cabin. Numerous seasonal camps serve as nodes along a complex system of trails, including Manzana Narrows Camp and Mission Pine Camp. The transition from the high peaks down into La Jolla Basin and through deep cuts like Peachtree Canyon illustrates the challenging terrain managed by forest services in the late 1950s. Water sources are critical landmarks here, with locations like Cold Spring, Grand Spring, and Live Oak Spring noted for their significance to travellers and foresters alike.
