The Kettle River defines the western corridor of this Pine County landscape, winding south past the Kettle River Dam and the prominent Maple Island. This 2010 survey illustrates the area south of Sandstone, where the river's descent is marked by Big Spring Falls and the inflow of Skunk Creek. To the east of the river, the Sandstone Federal Correctional Institution stands as a major local landmark, situated north of the Spring Park Cemetery. The drainage pattern is complex, with Fox Creek and Wilburn Creek feeding into the main river channel from the east, while the Grindstone River merges from the west near the southern boundary. Further east, Bear Creek meanders through more isolated terrain accessed by rural routes like Lost Fawn Rd and Arlore Twnshp Rd.
