Santa Clara Creek and its many tributaries, including North Santa Clara Creek and South Santa Clara Creek, carve a complex network of canyons across the border of Huerfano and Las Animas Counties. The 1970s landscape is defined by its water sources and historical livestock infrastructure, exemplified by the Santa Clara Windmill and several named springs such as Upper Duhme Springs and Lower Duhme Spring. Human settlement is concentrated in the south near the small community of Mauricio, which sits alongside Mauricio Canyon.
