About this map

Hotham Inlet dominates this coastal survey, where the brackish waters meet the intricate wetlands of the northern Alaskan coast. The landscape is defined by the sweeping curve of the Baldwin Peninsula to the southwest, separating the inlet from the open expanse of Kotzebue Sound. The eastern shore is a complex deltaic environment where the Buckland River winds through countless tundra ponds and small lakes before discharging into the inlet. This area remains largely uninhabited and roadless, serving as a snapshot of the raw maritime geography of the Northwest Arctic just after the middle of the century. Notable for navigation and surveying history is the VABM 216 Inlet triangulation station on the peninsula's ridge, while the Nazuruk Channel provides a southern passage through the deltaic marshes.
