Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge dominates this coastal stretch of the southern Kenai Peninsula, where the land meets the Gulf of Alaska through a series of deep indentations. The topography is defined by high peaks and steep coastal slopes, including Cone Mtn, Rock Mtn, and Badger Hill, which overlook the protected waters of Windy Bay and Chugach Bay. To the southeast, East Chugach Island sits offshore, part of the same maritime protection system. This environment, largely devoid of roads or settlements, reflects a wilderness managed for conservation, where the intricate shoreline and mountainous interior provide a baseline of 21st-century Alaskan coastal geography.
