The Kenai Mountains dominate this high-altitude landscape on the Kenai Peninsula, where several massive federal land designations converge. The eastern portion of the sheet is defined by the high peaks and glaciers of Kenai Fjords National Park, while the western slopes are protected by the Kenai Wilderness (Andrew Simons Unit) and the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge. The map serves as a record of these management boundaries in the early 21st century, showing how the different units of the National Wilderness Preservation System and the refuge system meet along the interior ridges. Unlike more developed regions, this area remains a roadless expanse defined by extreme topography and untouched wilderness boundaries.
