About this map

The Gulf of Mexico coastline in western Bay County is dominated by the narrow stretch of sand separating the sea from Powell Lake and its outlet at Philips Inlet. Surveyed during the mid-1940s, the landscape is defined by the recently completed Intracoastal Waterway, which cuts a straight line through low-lying terrain. To the north, the elevation rises slightly into the namesake Seminole Hills, while the surrounding lowlands are characterized by named wetlands such as Doe Head Swamp and Marshall Swamp. Small coastal settlements like Sunnyside and Hollywood Beach appear in their early stages of development along the shore. Inland, the community of Laird and the County Line Landing on the Walton County border mark the sparse human footprint in this network of creeks and coastal forests.
