The intersections of three major timber and conservation lands—Remer State Forest, Chippewa National Forest, and Hill River State Forest—converge in this northern Minnesota landscape. This 1996 update, revised from earlier topographical data, illustrates a complex water management system characterized by several named impoundments such as the Highway 6 Impoundment and Birch Lake Impoundment.

Hydrological features dominate the terrain, including the centrally located Shingle Mill Lake and the aptly named Holy Water Lake further south. The boundary between Cass and Itasca Counties is clearly delineated, alongside the tri-county corner where Aitkin County joins the map. Significant recreational and management infrastructure is noted, including the snowmobile trail corridor and several forest management roads that wind through the dense wetland and timber blocks.
