Settled at the junction of the river and its namesake waterway, the small community of Slate Creek serves as a focal point, featuring a Cem and the Slate Creek Emergency Airport. The river's serpentine course is punctuated by several prominent landforms including Horseshoe Bend and named riverbanks such as Slicker Bar, Russell Bar, and Taylor Bar.

West of the river, the landscape rises into the protected timberlands of the Nez Perce National Forest, where landmarks like Riverview Saddle and Haystack Mountain overlook a network of drainage creeks. Mapping here in the early 1960s recorded a mix of logistical infrastructure and wilderness, from the Dairy Mountain Road traversing the ridges to the turbulent Blackhawk Rapids on the river south of the main settlement.
