Sol Duc River and the Bogachiel River headwaters dominate this high-altitude landscape in Clallam County, where the Olympic Peninsula drainage basins meet. The 2011 survey by the U.S. Geological Survey captures a network of interior peaks and ridges, including the distinctively named Sore Thumb, Slide Peak, and Misery Peak. The presence of Hyak Shelter and Twentyone Mile Shelter indicates the area’s importance for wilderness navigation and backcountry travel. While most of the map is defined by the steep descent of tributaries like Alckee Creek and Munden Creek, quiet alpine features such as Ring Lake and Blackwood Lake are situated near the prominent Blackwood Creek drainage. The terrain is further marked by the high summits of Sugarloaf Mountain and Pine Mountain, which stand above the various forks of the South Fork Calawah River and North Fork Bogachiel River.
