The Reese Valley floor and the surrounding high Nevada desert terrain dominate this mid-century topographic survey. Small settlements such as Campbell and Peterson Station sit along the valley periphery, while the drainage of Peterson Creek and its many springs support the seasonal cycles of the ranching landscape. To the west, the Desatoya Mountains rise sharply, countered on the east by the significant elevations of the Toiyabe National Forest, which includes the map's namesake South Shoshone Peak and Bald Peak.
