Thunder Basin National Grassland dominates this high plains landscape along the border of Converse and Niobrara Counties. The terrain is defined by a complex network of ephemeral drainage systems, including the North Fork Crooked Draw, John Henry Draw, and Lightning Cr. These watercourses carve through the arid topography, punctuated by prominent rises such as Cow Creek Buttes in the north and the namesake Split Hill to the south.
