About this map

Great Salt Lake dominates the eastern expanse of this orthophotomap, showing the shoreline as it stood at elevation 4193 in November 1966. This specialized topographic study utilizes an orthophotomosaic base, providing a visual texture of the expansive Mud Flat that separates the open water from the desert interior. In the northeastern corner, Spring Bay forms a distinct indentation in the coast. The absence of roads or trails throughout this portion of Box Elder County emphasizes the remote, undisturbed nature of the salt flats during the late 1960s. Soundings provided by the U.S. Naval Reserve and data from the Usc&GS allow for a rare look at the underwater contours and the shifting boundary where the water meets the alkali crust of the Great Basin.
