The Deschutes River and Crooked River converge in a dramatic landscape of deep canyons and volcanic plateaus, forming The Peninsula and fueling the newly created Lake Chinook. This 1962 field-checked survey captures the area at a point of transition, showing the infrastructure of the Crooked River Gorge including the Diversion Dam, Opal Springs, and a Pumphouse.

Evidence of earlier high-desert life persists in the small settlements and homesteads found on the surrounding flats. In the south, the Lower Bridge Sch (Aban'd) and Holmes Ranch mark the ranching history of the Jefferson and Deschutes County line. The terrain remains largely open, designated as Lower Desert, and is traversed by a network of ranch roads like Market Road and several rugged tracks labeled Jeep Trail, leading to natural landmarks such as Steelhead Falls and Big Falls.
