The Schell Creek Range dominates the western portion of this high-altitude landscape, where deep incisions like Garrett Canyon, Stage Canyon, and Still Canyon drop toward the eastern basin. This transition from mountainous forest to valley floor is defined by the boundary of the Humboldt National Forest, protecting the watershed that feeds numerous water sources including Crystal Spring and the drainage of McCurdy Cr.

Surface water is a critical feature of this high desert environment, with the Spring Valley floor hosting Spring Valley Cr and significant seasonal wetlands. Several namesake water points serve as markers for travelers and local history, notably Mud Springs and its associated Mud Springs Draw, along with Garden Springs and Golden Springs on the lower slopes.
