Sultan and Startup sit along the northern corridor of this landscape, where the Sultan River meets the Skykomish River. The transition from the developed river valley to the steep, water-carved uplands is immediate. Early 21st-century land use is evident in the mixture of specialized agricultural sites like Hofstra Dairy, Groeneveld Farms, and Double M Ranch, alongside local infrastructure such as the Sky Harbor Airport and the Sultan Mill Pond.

South of the river, the terrain rises sharply toward the Snohomish County and King County line. This area is defined by a dense network of high-elevation water bodies, including the curiously named Drunken Charlie Lake, Lake Dorothy, and Tomtit Lake. The complex drainage patterns of Youngs Creek and Cherry Creek highlight the geographic isolation of the southern portion of the quadrangle compared to the busy Us-2 transit route through the valley.
