The Skykomish River and its major tributaries, the Sultan River and Wallace River, converge in the northern portion of this landscape, defining the development of Sultan and the nearby settlement of Startup. Modern infrastructure, including the Old Sultan-Startup Rd and Sultan Basin Rd, follows these natural corridors, while the Sultan Mill Pond and Sultan Cem reflect the community's industrial and social centers.

South of the river valley, the terrain rises into the foothills where numerous high-elevation water bodies are tucked away. These include Lake Elsie, Tomtit Lake, and the curiously named Drunken Charlie Lake. The southern boundary reveals the transition from Snohomish County into King County, crossing over Cherry Creek and Yellow Creek. This area is characterized by a complex network of forest roads and creek drainages, such as Elwell Creek and McCoy Creek, that highlight the region's logging and recreational geography.
