The Continental Divide cuts through this high-latitude terrain, marking a fundamental hydrological boundary in the central Brooks Range. This 1986 provisional survey reflects the area shortly after its formal protection under the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act. The Alatna River meanders through the eastern portion of the sheet, joined by glacial tributaries including the Pingaluk River and Nahtuk River.

Evidence of human presence is remarkably sparse, limited to a single Cabin situated along the river system. The landscape is dominated by the Gates of the Arctic National Park and the contiguous Gates of the Arctic Wilderness. In the southern half of the map, Takahula Lake serves as a prominent landmark at the headwaters of the Takahula River, illustrating the pristine alpine drainage patterns characteristic of this subarctic region before more modern climate and land-use changes.
