Johns Valley provides the setting for the historical settlement of Widtsoe, located at the western edge of this survey. The landscape transitions from the flat valley floor into the high, broken terrain of the Escalante Mountains and the dramatic plateau of Griffin Top. Managed as part of the Dixie National Forest, the region is defined by a complex network of drainages including Sweetwater Creek, South Creek, and the deeply incised Escalante Canyon.
