These operations relied on a complex network of irrigation and drainage, evidenced by the Nelson Ditch and numerous smaller ditches diverting water from Troublesome Creek and Smith Creek.

Evidence of earlier settlement persists at the Maynard Homestead (Aband) to the north, situated near the headwaters of Troublesome Creek. The topography is dominated by the Freezeout Mountains and the prominent Bald Mountain in the northeast corner.
