Tabor City and its eastern surroundings are defined by a low-lying landscape of expansive wetlands and small agricultural settlements along the border of North Carolina and South Carolina. This 2019 survey captures the unique topography of the Carolina bays, characterized by elliptical depressions like Strouds Bay, Torry Bay, and Greenhouse Bay. These features, alongside the massive Grissett Swamp, have historically dictated the placement of communities such as Vinegar Hill and Cribb Town, which occupy the slightly higher, well-drained ground between the water systems.
