Three Buttes rises as a prominent landmark in this segment of Central Montana, situated just west of the Fergus County and Petroleum County line. The landscape is defined by a series of drainages, most notably the winding course of S Fork Bear Cr in the north and the expansive basin of Fords Cr to the south. Smaller watercourses like Brickyard Cr and Briggs Coulee carve through the terrain, illustrating the complex hydrology of the high plains.
