North Fork John Day River defines the northeastern corner of this terrain, where it forms a natural boundary within the Umatilla National Forest. The landscape is dominated by a series of high ridges and deep drainages, most notably the prominent rocky spine of The Cockscomb. During this mid-1990s period, the area remained largely undeveloped, characterized by a complex network of 4WD trails and primitive campsites.

Resource extraction and high-country grazing are evident through the presence of several quarries and named meadows like Turner Meadow, Onion Flats, and Wassen Meadows. A high concentration of named water sources, including Snapp Spring, Mote Spring, and Big Springs, suggests the importance of water management for local land use. To the east, the North Fork John Day Wilderness marks a transition into more strictly protected lands, while drainages such as Desolation Creek and Bruin Creek carve the southern reaches of the quadrangle.
