About this map

The Bruning State Airfield dominates the central landscape of this Thayer County survey, a remnant of mid-century aviation infrastructure situated north of Alexandria. The surrounding terrain transitions from the high plains of Belle Prairie and Bruning townships down toward the bottomlands of Big Sandy Creek. This 1960 field-checked map preserves a snapshot of rural life through its network of section-line roads and community landmarks, including School No 21 and several local burying grounds such as Pleasant Plain Cem and Antioch Cem. The southern edge of the sheet follows the Union Pacific rail line as it skirts the creek, providing a clear view of the transportation corridor that shaped the growth of the Alexandria area. Numerous gravel pits near the creek beds suggest the local industry and geology of the period.
