The Superior National Forest encompasses this wilderness area at the headwaters of the St Louis River, where industrial activity meets rural community life. The landscape is defined by the Mining Railroad cutting diagonally through the forest, connecting the iron ranges to the ports of Lake Superior. This corridor bypasses several large water bodies, including Seven Beaver Lake, Round Lake, and Pine Lake, which dominate the northern half of the quadrangle.
