Red Lake (Tonalea PO) serves as a central hub in this high-desert region, situated near the intersection of a prominent pipeline and the local road network. The map documents a landscape defined by the Navajo - Hopi Joint Use Area, where water sources like Mormon Well, Bitter Well, and Side Rock Well were critical infrastructure for the local population and their livestock. Geologic and historical landmarks provide distinct navigation points, from the towering Elephant Feet rock formations to the George Smith Hist Mon near the Trading Post. The drainage of Begashibito Wash dominates the valley floor, cutting through areas of Sand Dunes and leading toward the ephemeral Red Lake. This 1970 field-checked survey preserves the layout of Tonalea during a period of administrative transition on the reservation.
