The eastern shores of the Toledo Bend Reservoir dominate this landscape along the Louisiana-Texas border. This modern topography illustrates the intricate relationship between the reservoir and the many finger-like inlets formed by flooded valleys, including Wilson Branch and Caney Creek. To the east, the terrain transitions into the managed timberlands of the Sabine National Forest and the training grounds of Fort Polk. Small, dispersed settlements like Clare, Rattan, and Toro are connected by a network of local roads that weave around the undulating topography of Sabine Parish. Local genealogy and community history are preserved at sites such as Clearwater Cem, Victoria Cem, and McMillion Cem, which remain tucked away in the piney woods and drainage basins of Bayou Toro and Arthur Creek.
