Santa Monica Mountains and the coastal shelf of Malibu dominate this 1900 survey, published in the early 1920s. The landscape is defined by its deep south-flowing canyons, including Dume Canyon, Trancas Canyon, and Escondido Canyon, which drain toward the Pacific Ocean and Dume Pt. Settlement is sparse and concentrated in the northern valleys, where Newbury Park sits in the Conejo Valley and the small outpost of Triunfo marks the Russell Valley.
