Owens Valley terrain dominates this 2021 study, where the arid flats meet the dramatic rise of the White-Inyo Range. In the southwest corner, the settlement of Monola sits near the winding course of the Owens River, representing one of the few points of habitation in a landscape largely defined by sparse water sources and steep relief. The importance of reliable water is evident in the many named springs scattered across the foothills, including Uhlmeyer Spring, Batchelder Spring, and Wilkerson Springs. Transportation in this high-desert environment is restricted to a few critical corridors like Death Valley Road and the ascent through Westgard Pass. Numerous forest service trails, such as 35e421 Trl and 35e304 Trl, provide access into the Inyo Mountains and the canyons of the Inyo National Forest.
