The Nulato Hills dominate this portion of the interior, where the landscape is defined by the high drainage divides between several major river systems. This 2016 survey captures a remote wilderness at the intersection of three administrative boundaries: the Nome and Yukon-Koyukuk Census Areas, the Nome and Kusilvak Census Areas, and the Kusilvak and Yukon-Koyukuk Census Areas. The complex topography is carved by the headwaters of the Swift River, which flows through the northern and central sections, while the Anvik River emerges in the northeast. To the south, Runkels Cr cuts westward through the hills, illustrating the intricate hydrography of the region's subarctic watersheds.
