Upstead Lake and the surrounding wet lowlands of Saint Louis County characterize this section of northern Minnesota in the early 21st century. The landscape is defined by its glacial hydrology, where Finberg Lake and Exnell Lake sit amidst a complex network of marshes and smaller water bodies. The terrain is notably flat, punctuated by Devils Islands and drained by the meandering course of Sand Cr as it flows toward the east.

Settlement is sparse in this heavily wooded and marshy region, with activity concentrated near the small community of Toivola on the eastern edge of the quadrangle. Transportation is limited to a few primary corridors, most notably MN-73 which cuts through the southwestern corner. This survey provides a clear view of the wilderness character of the area, documenting the persistence of these remote wetlands and the modest human footprint within the Hull township area.
