1955 Map of Utukok River C-4

USGS Topo · Published 1966

About this map

Utukok River meanders across this northern landscape, which was part of the Naval Petroleum Reserve No. 4 at the time of this mid-century survey. The terrain is defined by a dense network of lakes, ponds, and wetlands, characteristic of the North Slope's drainage patterns. In the southwest corner, the Kokolik River cuts through the topography, while a lone Tractor Trail in the northeast provides a rare sign of human transit across the tundra. Compiled by the Army Map Service using 1955 aerial photography, the map documents a region largely untouched by permanent settlement, where water and permafrost features dictate the layout of the land.
