Vieja Pass serves as a critical geographic waypoint within the high desert landscape of Sierra Vieja. This 2016 survey documents a remote portion of the Trans-Pecos where the county line between Jeff Davis and Presidio counties bisects the high mesas. The terrain is defined by a series of prominent plateaus, including Newton Mesa, Star Mesa, and Soldier Mesa, which are separated by a complex network of drainage systems such as Number One Canyon and Number Two Canyon.
