About this map

Village Mills and Honey Island anchor this mid-1980s look at the East Texas piney woods, where timber and rail infrastructure define the landscape. The Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe railroad line cuts a straight path across the southern half of the quadrangle, serving the settlements of Lelavale and Honey Island as it bypasses the dense wetlands of the Big Thicket area. Numerous waterways, including the winding Village Creek and its many tributaries like Walker Branch and Shaley Creek, create a complex drainage pattern through the low-lying terrain.
