Mining claims and high-altitude workings dominate this landscape within the Beaverhead National Forest as it was surveyed in the late 20th century. Concentrations of extraction history are visible around Quartz Hill and Ponsonby Peak, featuring numerous shafts and prospects alongside named operations like the Monte Cristo Mine, Daisy Vein Mine, and Great Western Mine. Further south, the Old Faithful Mine and Queen of the Hills Mine occupy the drainages above Queens Gulch.

The rugged terrain is defined by prominent summits such as Gray Jockey Peak, Sheep Mountain, and Black Lion Mountain, which overlook a network of alpine water sources including Bobs Lake and Black Lion Lake. Evidence of Forest Service management is noted at the Canyon Creek Guard Sta and the Canyon Creek Campground near the banks of Canyon Creek.
