Walter Springs and the surrounding highlands of northern Napa County are documented here during the late 1950s, shortly after the completion of the Monticello Dam transformed the landscape. The western arm of Lake Berryessa dominates the southeastern quadrant, where recreation and infrastructure such as the Putah Creek Resort and Camp Berryessa are situated. Further north, the map records the older rural school site of Monticello Sch near the edge of the newly established reservoir.

The topography is defined by the canyon systems of Putah Creek and Pope Creek, which carve through a landscape of ridges and flats. Resource extraction and early livestock heritage are evident in the presence of the Blue Monday Mine, the Buckhorn Mine, and the Stone Corral. The transition from historical mining and ranching toward modern water management and leisure is clearly visible as the Lake Berryessa Recreation Area begins to shape the canyon's character.
