Walton Peak rises as the central landmark of this high-elevation landscape along the boundary of Routt Co and Grand Co. The terrain is defined by the high ridges of the Gore Range, where the protected wilderness of the Routt National Forest meets the Arapaho National Forest. This 2013 survey provides a detailed look at the backcountry recreation network established in the region, centered on the Meadows Campground and a series of primitive routes including the Routt Divide Trail 1108.1 and Sarvis Creek Trail 1105.1. Drainage patterns are clearly marked by the headwaters of Green Cr, Sarvis Cr, and Muddy Cr, which carve through the steep topography. In the northwest corner, US Hwy 40 offers the primary point of access into this section of the Continental Divide country, illustrating the corridor of travel that links these mountain passes.
