Grassy Butte sits at the northern edge of a landscape defined by the winding course of the Little Missouri River. This terrain is characterized by the complex drainage systems of Wannagan Cr, Franks Cr, and Ash Coulee, which carve through the high plains. Large portions of the territory are managed as the Little Missouri National Grassland and the northern reaches of Theodore Roosevelt National Park, preserving a section of the North Dakota badlands where historical land use remains visible through the network of section lines and isolated trails.
