About this map

Washoe Lake and the smaller Little Washoe Lake dominate the floor of the Washoe Valley, a terminal basin where mountain runoff gathers beneath the steep eastern face of the Carson Range. This 1960s landscape, updated in the mid-1970s, captures the evolution of regional settlement from the remains of Comstock-era industrial sites to modern residential development. Historical markers like the Ophir Mill Hist Marker and the Bowers Mansion County Park signify the valley's mid-19th-century role as a logistical hub for the Virginia City mines, providing timber and milling operations. While Washoe City appears as a sparse collection of structures, the emergence of New Washoe City to the south reveals the mid-century suburban expansion into the high desert. In the timbered slopes of the Toiyabe National Forest, numerous creeks including Galena Creek, Winters Creek, and Ophir Creek descend toward the valley floor, feeding local agricultural interests and the scattered settlements of Franktown and Whispering Pines.
