Industrial activity and institutional land use characterize this portion of the Pennsylvania coal region. The anthracite heritage is visible in the northwest, where Strip Mines and the Lackawanna River define the landscape around Carbondale, Simpson, and Vandling. A dense network of transport infrastructure supported these operations, including the Erie Railroad, the New York Ontario and Western Railroad, and the Delaware and Hudson Railroad. To the east, the terrain rises toward the Canaan Mountains, where the Fairview State Hospital sits as a significant local landmark.
