About this map

The agricultural grid of the Imperial Valley dominates this mid-century landscape, centered on the town of Westmorland and the rail-oriented settlement of Calipatria. A complex network of irrigation and drainage infrastructure, including the Westside Main Canal and Vail Supply Canal, reveals the engineered nature of this desert environment. Along the eastern edge, the Alamo River and New River snake through the terrain, feeding into the Wildlife Management Area containing Ramer Lake and Finney Lake. The Southern Pacific railroad runs through the area, supporting the small stations of Rockwood and Fondo. Local community life is evidenced by the Fremont School, Bonita Sch, and the presence of a Radio Tower KROP near the settlement of Hovley.
