Flathead National Forest encompasses this high-elevation wilderness within the Northern Rockies, where the Spotted Bear River cuts a prominent valley through the center of the sheet. The landscape is defined by massive peaks and ridgelines, including the namesake Whitcomb Peak and the high walls of Gunsight Peak, which overlooks Gunsight Lake. The drainage network is complex, with Silvertip Cr, Sergeant Cr, and Dean Cr feeding into the river system. Notable landmarks such as the Limestone Wall and Big Bill Mtn reflect the verticality of the terrain. Small alpine features like Shelf Lake and Blue Lakes are tucked into glacial basins, while significant ridges like Elk Ridge and Dean Ridge provide natural dividers between the various creek drainages in this roadless portion of the forest.
