Walker Creek and its tributary Little Walker Creek carve through the parallel ridges of the Blue Ridge Mountains, defining the rural character of this corner of southwest Virginia. The settlement of White Gate sits in the valley between Brushy Mtn and Walker Mtn, serving as a central point near the Walkers Creek Cem. Much of the higher elevations are protected within the Jefferson National Forest, where the Appalachian National Scenic Trail winds across summits like Sugar Run Mtn and through Big Horse Gap.
