
The Cumberland Plateau dominates the western half of this landscape, its sharp escarpments dropping into the fertile basin of the Sequatchie River. In the mid-1940s, industrial activity centers on the Whitwell Mine and the rail corridors of the Louisville & Nashville and Nashville Chattanooga & St Louis railroads. These lines follow the valley floor, connecting the coal-rich heights to the agrarian settlements below.
