1960 Map of Wind Gap

About this map

Blue Mountain dominates the northern landscape, where the famous geological notch known as Wind Gap provides a natural corridor for travel through Chestnut Ridge. The 1960s economy of the Lehigh Valley is visible in the dense clusters of slate-industry infrastructure, including numerous quarries surrounding Pen Argyl and West Pen Argyl. The industrial character of the era is underscored by the Pen Argyl Yards and the crossing routes of the Lehigh and New England Railroad and the Erie Lackawanna Railroad. Along the ridge, the Appalachian Trail follows the high ground above State Game Lands No 168. To the south, the terrain transitions into a patchwork of rural hamlets and agricultural lands, dotted with family-named locales like Knechts, Aluta, and Rasleytown. Several community landmarks, such as St Peters Union Ch and the Mt View Park Racetrack, reflect the local social geography of the mid-20th century.
