Winter Flats occupies the heart of this high-desert landscape along the Garfield and Mesa county line. The terrain is defined by a dense network of drainage systems, including the prominent South Shale Ridge and deep incisions from Little Alkali Canyon and Main Canyon. Water sources, while scattered, are noted by the presence of Willow Spring and the meandering Jerry Cr. This 2019 survey shows the area's transition into more accessible lands via Co HWY 222 in the northeast corner and the remote X 5/10 RD. The concentration of named gulches and draws, such as Lefthand Draw and Lane Gulch, reveals a complex topography where high mesas break into narrow corridors. It is an area where the primary human footprint is found in the survey grid and a few gravel roads that navigate around the steep relief of Redrock Point.
