Younts Peak stands at the hydrological heart of this high-altitude landscape, where the Continental Divide separates the headwaters of the Missouri and Columbia River systems. In the northern reaches, the North Fork Yellowstone River and South Fork Yellowstone River begin their descent through the Teton Wilderness, joined by tributary waters from Thorofare Creek and Robinson Creek. The terrain is defined by massive peaks like Thorofare Mountain and Wall Mountain, alongside the broad elevation of the Buffalo Plateau.

Transport through this wilderness is restricted to a primitive Pack Trail network, crossing high points such as Marston Pass. To the east, the drainage shifts toward the South Fork Shoshone River within the Washakie Wilderness and Shoshone National Forest. This 1970 field-checked survey documents a period when the area remained an untouched alpine corridor, managed across the boundaries of Park and Fremont Counties.
