About this map

The San Antonio Mission and Ysleta Jesuit College anchor this detailed study of the Rio Grande Valley southeast of El Paso, conducted just before the onset of World War II. The landscape is defined by an intricate network of irrigation and drainage infrastructure, including the Riverside Canal and numerous feeders like the Elizario Loop Feeder, which supported the agricultural valley floor. Cultural landmarks of the era are prominent, such as the CCC Camp situated near the edge of the Mesa and the County Farm near Buford. Two major rail lines, the Southern Pacific and the Texas and Pacific, parallel the Rio Grande, tracing the international border between the United States and Mexico. Traditional settlements such as Ysleta, Socorro, and San Elizario are shown with their clustered buildings and historic road patterns, including the Juan de Herrera Road.
